Learn about layers

On the left is the table of contents for our available data layers.

Follow the steps below to see how they work.

1. Click on the group layer, Dune Research. The main groups organize the data layers.
2. Now turn on the Dune Research Locations layer by clicking the check box. Did you see the layer appear in the map?
3. With the layer on, use the slider underneath the layer to see different levels of layer transparency.
4. Now find the same symbol for this layer in the map and click the symbol. Some layers in the MDI have pop-up windows like the Dune Research Locations layer.
5. Now check out other layers.

Learn about Basemaps

1. Click on the word Basemap.
2. Now click on Imagery Clicking these basemaps, changes the basemap of your view. Try a few more.
3. To minimize the Basemap window, just click the word Basemap again.

Learn about Measurement

1. Click on the word Measurement.Now you see three options for measuring on the map: Area, Distance, and Locaiton. Click the icon for Area, . Use the dropdown to change the unit.
2. Left click once on the map to set your first node. Then move to make a second node. Continue until you are read to set your last node. Double-left-click to complete your polygon. Check out Distance and Location measurements too!
3. To minimize the Measurement window, just click the word Measurement again.

Launch Understanding Michigan Dune Map Journal to access a variety of interactive pre-made map panels featuring imagery, multimedia, and graphics about Michigan Dune geomorphology.

Currently you can add as many shapefiles as you want. The files will appear in the map but not currently in the Table of Contents. Please ignore the response error: "Tried to register widget with id==tocDiv but that id is already registered".
