Welcome to the National Atlas Project for Developing Countries. Unlike many developed nations, most less developed nations do not have the capacity to produce national atlases. As a result, students in developing nations lack a comprehensive resource to investigate the geography of their country. The purpose of this site is to provide as a service - a simple national atlas - to countries that do not have the ability to map. This site has been developed by the students and faculty at Calvin College, located in Grand Rapids, Mich., U.S.A., who are taking and teaching courses in cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The concept of a national atlas is not new. There are several very excellent national atlases produced by a variety of countries around the world. However, the resources necessary to produce these atlases require a wealth of computer software, hardware and person power. As a felt need, we are hoping to serve a variety of individuals interested in seeing simple national atlases for developing countries. Key to this project is collecting sub-national data and mapping it.
